In 2024, our very own studio director, Lacey Ingersoll, sat down with the Traverse City Dance Project to discuss a topic that’s deeply personal to us: the role of dance in rural communities.

In the interview, Lacey shared what it’s like to lead a multigenerational studio in Kalkaska, and why access to high-quality arts education—especially in rural areas—is more vital than ever.

“In smaller towns, the arts aren’t always prioritized or accessible,” Lacey explained. “Dance gives our students a voice, a sense of belonging, and a chance to dream big, whether they’re 3 or 18. It’s not just about technique—it’s about confidence, discipline, and community.”

The conversation touched on everything from the challenges of operating a studio outside a major city to the joy of watching students discover their potential both on and off the stage.

Key themes from the interview included:

• The power of dance to build resilience in youth

• The studio’s role as a second home for many local families

• How rural dance programs can bridge gaps in arts education

• The importance of representation and mentorship in the arts

This interview was a powerful reminder of why we do what we do at Fitch Dance Company—and how the ripple effect of dance can touch lives far beyond the studio walls.

We’re incredibly grateful to the Traverse City Dance Project for opening up this conversation and highlighting the value of dance in all communities—big and small.
